Proteins are the building blocks of life. Any protein you consume will go immediately towards the repair or building of your cells and muscles. At a minimum you need 0.5 grams of protein per pound of lean mass per day on an average, to maintain your 'structure'. If you are moderately active you need 0.7 or 0.8 grams, and if you are an active athlete you need as much as 1 gram of protein per pound of lean mass.
